ImPACT

ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is an FDA-cleared, computerized concussion management tool.

ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is an FDA-cleared, computerized concussion management tool for individuals ages 12-59. Our providers use ImPACT during the evaluation and management of a suspected concussion to help detect changes in neurocognitive function. ImPACT measures cognitive skills and abilities most likely to be affected by concussion, including:

  • Visual and Verbal Memory

  • Visual Motor Speed

  • Reaction Time

  • Impulse Control

A comprehensive report is available to medical providers after the ImPACT test is completed, and can help gauge the level of any impairments. The best-case scenario is that baseline ImPACT concussion test results will be available to your provider at the time of your appointment, so that he or she can compare pre- and post-injury testing scores. When baseline scores are not available, your physician can use population averages based on your age and gender to help determine the best course of treatment after a concussion.

How long does the ImPACT test take to complete?

ImPACT testing takes about 30-45 minutes to complete.

How is the ImPACT test taken?

The ImPACT test is taken on a computer using a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Some schools give ImPACT testing in group settings such as in a library or computer lab to establish a baseline. At the Rothman Concussion Network, ImPACT is taken in private exam rooms both at baseline and after a concussion, and is administered by an ImPACT Trained Athletic Trainer (ITAT).

Can I fail an ImPACT test?

No, an ImPACT test is not like a test taken in school and cannot be "failed". The test is simply used to establish personal measures of cognitive abilities that are sometimes affected by a concussion. However, if you do not give your best effort during testing, the test may be flagged as invalid.

Is ImPACT testing covered by insurance?

When the ImPACT test is used during a post-injury concussion exam, the test is typically covered by insurance. When an ImPACT test is given to a healthy individual to establish a baseline, the test is not reviewed by a physician, and is not covered by insurance. Individuals can purchase an ImPACT test for $15 through the Rothman Concussion Network.
